Creative Drumming

Welcome to our Creative Drumming class, designed specifically for musicians aged 10 and up (including adults!). This course aims to inspire creativity and foster a love for music through the exciting world of drumming.

Students will embark on a rhythmic journey, exploring various drumming cultures, and styles. The focus of the course is to increase our awareness of ourselves, each other, and our environment through sound and rhythm.  We will create music together, learn to use our instruments as a tool for self-expression, invite discussion on the ideas presented, and break through barriers that hold us back.

Through hands-on practice and engaging activities, students will learn to create their own unique drumming patterns and rhythms, and awaken the musician within. They will be encouraged to experiment and improvise, thereby developing and expanding their musical intuition and creativity.

No prior drumming experience is necessary, just a passion for music and a willingness to learn.

Please note: Drums will be provided for use during class, but students are welcome to bring their own if they prefer.

A versatile and accomplished percussionist, composer, and educator, Louis Romanos has a rich musical background that spans various genres and mediums. He began his musical journey in Connecticut, where he studied drums with Art Perretta. At the age of nineteen, he moved to New Orleans, the cradle of jazz, to pursue his studies in music and philosophy and study with masters such as Idris Muhammad, and Johnny Vidacovich. Louis went on to perform and record with some of the most prominent musicians in the industry, such as Kenji Bunch, Tommy James, Gene Bertoncini, Steve Masakowski, Wycliff Gordon, Chuck Leavell, Keith Richards, John Mayer, Charles and Cyril Neville, Al Hirt, Dave Easley, Charlie Miller, Earl Turbinton, Tricia Boutte, Marva Wright, Dave Anderson, and many others.

Louis also has a passion for creating music for dance choreography and has collaborated with numerous dancers, instructors, schools, and dance companies as an accompanist and composer. Some of his notable partners include CORE, Red Dance, Risa Steinberg, Rachael Burman, Jackie Bugelici, Miguel Lopez, Joffrey Ballet School, Alvin Ailey School, UGA Dance, Brenau University, and Southeast Ballet Association.

As a composer, Louis has created original music for various projects, such as live bands, dance, TV, video games, indie movies, and other multimedia. Some of his recent works include a dystopian futuristic score for the short film Odessa, an action score for Fira’s Game, and an uplifting score for the documentary Pink and Blue: The Colors of Hereditary Cancer. He also scored the live theater production of The Bakkhai, the video games The Dark Ages of Titan and Corpse Wagon, and the modern ballet piece Interior Borders by choreographer Joan Buttram at the University of Georgia. He recorded drums for the theme song of the Squidbillies on the Cartoon Network.

Currently, Louis leads and writes for his own groups, The Louis Romanos Trio, and Spondee, which will release its debut album in 2023. His groups have performed concerts and clinics across the USA, Hawaii, and Europe. His many albums can be streamed from all major streaming platforms.
