Printer-friendly version

Lamar Dodd students will join Hugh Hodgson students to collaborate on a joint research symposium and exhibition on March 8th. The 2018 MARS symposium expands the vision of the Musicology/Ethnomusicology Area’s longstanding Music Research Symposium to include our neighbors and frequent collaborators in the School of Art. This day-long student-run event welcomes submissions from graduate and advanced undergraduate students to present research related to music and/or art. Work presenting an interdisciplinary approach is especially welcome. These presentations may take the form of research papers, lecture recitals, performances, or art exhibitions. Please see below for full details about this call for submissions. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

The 2018 UGA Music & Art Research Symposium will take place on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music and Lamar Dodd School of Art. The symposium program committee invites all graduate and advanced undergraduate students to submit abstracts for papers related to musicology, ethnomusicology, vernacular or popular music traditions, world music cultures, music technology, music education, music therapy, and music theory and analysis; OR art history, historiography, methodology, art theory and criticism, art education, museum studies, and art practice. Papers displaying an interdisciplinary approach are especially welcome.

Abstracts must not exceed 300 words and must be typed, single spaced, and in one paragraph. Abstracts should demonstrate a clear focus, a coherent argument and, if appropriate, knowledge of previous research or awareness of the implications for future investigations into a particular musical or visual culture, context, or problem.

Submissions should include:

  1. Abstract with a title for the proposed paper
  2. The author’s contact information
  3. Audio-visual requirements for presentation

Please note that since presentations are limited to twenty-five minutes, papers should be no more than twenty minutes in length (approximately 7-8 double-spaced pages); this will allow time for a brief introduction and follow-up discussion.

Call for Performance or Exhibition: Deadline January 23

Depending on interest, we plan on including a small concert and/or art exhibition as a part of the symposium. Performance or exhibition proposals should feature an interdisciplinary approach and highlight connections between art and music.

Submissions should include:

  1. A recording, description, sketch or photograph
  2. The artist’s contact information
  3. Description of the space required or proposed dimensions, as appropriate to the artistic discipline

ALL SUBMISSION MATERIALS should be submitted electronically (PDF or Word document; Word preferred) to the following email address: For the subject heading, please write “MARS Abstract Submission” and use the following file name convention: surname_abstract.docx or .pdf

Submissions must be received by Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Acceptance and rejection notifications will be sent by February 7, 2018.
