Dr. Joshua L. Bynum is Associate Professor of Trombone at the University of Georgia and trombonist with the Georgia Brass Quintet. He enjoys an active schedule, balancing roles as both performer and educator.
He is a founding member of Resonant Projection, a professional trombone quartet dedicated to promoting new and undiscovered works. In the summers, Bynum serves as trombone faculty for the Festival of Vale Veneto, in the Rio Grande de Sul region of Brazil. He also coordinates the brass studies with the Music of the Spheres Festival, located in São Paulo, Brazil.
Josh performs regularly with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and is currently serving as section trombone with the Macon Symphony. He has held positions in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Tuscaloosa, and Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestras, and has also performed with the Charleston, IRIS, Augusta, Arkansas, Quad City, and Shreveport Symphony Orchestras, along with the Joffrey and Stuttgart Ballet companies.
He has given performances and clinics at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference, and International Trombone Festival. In the fall of 2010, he gave the Georgia state premiere performance of John Mackey’s Harvest: Concerto for Trombone with the UGA Wind Ensemble. He was a participant of the 2007 Alessi Seminar and has was named to the 2009 Arkansas Arts on Tour Artist Roster.
Bynum is a graduate of Temple University, the University of Iowa, and Jacksonville State University. His studies were with Nitzan Haroz, David Gier. and James Roberts, receiving additional instruction with Glenn Dodson and other members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He currently serves as the Journal Advertising Manager for the International Trombone Association and is an Artist & Clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company.
