Trombone, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet studio news

The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music trombone, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet studios have been quite busy as of late! Here are a few recent highlights.

Trombone Studio

  • David Gonzalez (DMA) has been selected as a participant in the 2014 Alessi Seminar in Fossano, Italy. He was one of five tenor trombone players chosen from an applicant pool of over 100 submissions.
  • Austin Blake (MM) has been selected to participate in the 2014 Masterworks Summer Music Festival.
  • Hunter Todd (BM) has been accepted into the MM programs of Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Delaware. He has also received TA and Fellowship offers, and will be making a choice very soon.

Clarinet Studio

  • Daniel Martinec (BM), has been accepted into the MM programs of the University of Maryland, University of Texas at Austin where he received a scholarship, and the University of Michigan where he received a fellowship.
  • Joseph Beverly (BM), has been accepted into the MM programs of the New England Conservatory, and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, University of Michigan, University of Maryland at which he was awarded scholarships.

Saxophone Studio

Fourteen members of the studio performed at the 2014 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference at the University of Illinois, Champaign:

  • Stan Flanders, DMA student and saxophone teaching assistant, presented a lecture recital, "The Indian Saxophone: an Analysis and Performance of Charpentier's Gavambodi II Using Carnatic Performance Practice."
  • Gabriel Pique, junior performance major, advanced as one of six finalists out of 120 in the solo competition.
  • Junior performance major Brandon Quarles was selected to perform on a masterclass.
  • The saxophone studio ensemble also performed on the collegiate ensemble showcase, which featured 13 studios from across the country.

Trumpet Studio

Recent awards and accolades include:

  • UGA Trumpet Ensemble, 5th Place, National Trumpet Competition Trumpet Ensemble Division
  • Victoria Bethel, Semi-Finalist, National Trumpet Competition Undergraduate Solo Division
  • Anderson Romero, Semi-Finalist, National Trumpet Competition Graduate Solo Division
  • Kwanza Williams, 2nd Place, Mid-Atlantic Brass Band Festival Solo Competition
  • Ben Otieno, admitted to Eastern Music Festival
  • UGA Trumpet Ensemble, performance at Trumpet Festival of the Southeast in Chattanooga, Tennessee
  • UGA Trumpet Ensemble, upcoming performance at International Trumpet Guild Conference in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
