Trevor Barroero, former UGA percussion student, garnered numerous honors over the summer, ultimately resulting in his earning a spot, this winter, with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

Barroero spent a month performing timpani/percussion in British Columbia, first with the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA) in Powell River, and then with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute in Whistler.

“During my four weeks in British Columbia, I had the opportunity to collaborate with musicians from around the world to perform masterworks such as Mahler 5, the Rite of Spring, Don Juan, and Shostakovich 5,” said Barroero.

At PRISMA, Barroero had the opportunity to compete in the academy’s concerto competition, where he performed Emmanuel Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra. Barroero’s performance took first prize, which included a trip to Russia in December to perform with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

“The performance of the marimba concerto during the final round of the competition was extremely exhilarating,” said Barroero. “I owe a lot to the passion of the conductor that helped inspire the ensemble and to the talent of the string players that collaborated with me on the concerto. I still can't believe that I've been given this opportunity.”

To cap it all, Barroero also went to the Washburgh Timpani Seminar at the University of Maryland and won first place in the annual mock audition.
