UGA School of Music hosts recital, talk from US Army Band saxophonist

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music welcomes Chris Condon, saxophonist for the US Army Europe Band, for a recital and career talk on life in a military band in Edge Recital Hall on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Condon’s recital, scheduled from 6:30-7:30 p.m., will feature works from his upcoming album, “Pieces.” The album, set to be released on iTunes and Amazon this winter, consists of music for unaccompanied saxophone with compositions by J.S. Bach, Violeta Dinescu, Walter Hartley, Paul Bonneau and Alan Theisen.

Following the performance, at 8 p.m., Condon will discuss life in the US Army Band program, including the audition process, his musical and non-musical experiences in the program and what his day-to-day life is like in this career path. Those with questions about pursuing a career in military bands are encouraged to attend.

Condon, as a performer, is equally adept in classical and jazz styles, and while he specializes in the music of Bach, he is an outspoken supporter of new, experimental forms of music as well. 

He has played as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the world—from Austria to Portugal to South Korea—and was praised by conductor Crafton Beck of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra for having “the most beautiful tone [he had] ever heard on the instrument.”

In 2011, Mr. Condon enlisted in the U.S. Army Band program and has since served with the 282nd Band at Fort Jackson, S.C., the U.S. Army in Europe Band & Chorus in Germany, and is currently stationed with the 8th Army Band in Seoul, South Korea.

Admission to the recital is free and open to the public.
