Immigrant Voices, Contemporary Works for Piano: a recital by Piano Professor Liza Stepanova

Inspired by her own journey and prompted by recent events, Russian-American pianist Liza Stepanova explores the music of composers who are working in the United States but hail from around the world. The program includes “Tahiri, the Pure” by the Iranian composer Badie Khaleghian and Venezuelan-American Reinaldo Moya’s “The Way North” (2017) (Southeastern U.S. premiere). Additional composers include Lera Auerbach, Anna Clyne, Chaya Czernowin, Gabriela Lena Frank, Kamran Ince, Eun Young Lee, and Pablo Ortiz.

Pianist Liza Stepanova has performed at the Berlin Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. A founding member of the CAG-winning Lysander Piano Trio, she has worked with numerous composers, including William Bolcom, John Harbison, and Jennifer Higdon. Stepanova holds degrees from the “Hanns Eisler” Academy of Music in Berlin, Germany and a doctorate from The Juilliard School. Following appointments at Juilliard and Smith College, she is currently an assistant professor of piano at the University of Georgia.
