Lineage Percussion reunites for Alzheimer’s benefit in Arizona

Lineage Percussion, a percussion ensemble composed of current and former Hugh Hodgson School of Music students, will come together in Tucson, Ariz., on Wednesday, March 22, to perform in a benefit concert to raise $10,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Trevor Barroero, a Lineage member and former Hodgson School exchange student currently studying at the University of Arizona’s Fred Fox School of Music, organized the event, titled “… in loving memory,” and dedicated it to the memory of his father and grandmother. 

“Music was, and always will be, a source of healing for me,” said Barroero. “As a passionate and collaborative art form, music can thrive when words fail. For the recital on March 22nd, I have been working hard to find repertoire that will wrestle with the realities of grief while still highlighting the beauty of life.”

Barroero’s partners in Lineage—Lauren Floyd (B.Mus. ’16), currently studying at the University of Maryland, and Wesley Sumpter, a Hodgson School Music Performance – Percussion student—will join him in Arizona for this performance and for several other engagements.

“We are culminating three things that are very important to Lineage: live music, educational outreach, and recording,” said Floyd. “We are not only playing the concert, but we are also playing at several schools around the area and doing some coaching during that time, as well as recording some pieces that are integral to our repertoire as a trio.”

Barroero and Sumpter echoed Floyd’s sentiments on Lineage’s three goals—indeed, they are the cornerstones of their work.

“This is going to be a great concert and set of masterclasses for us not only as musicians but as people servicing others through our gifts,” said Sumpter. “I think that this venture speaks a lot about our commitment to the music, education through the arts, and to our group.”

These will be Lineage’s first performances in Arizona, as well as a reunion of sorts for the group, after some months apart. But the group views their time apart as a chance to gather new tools and use them to improve the ensemble.

“This reunion is a reflection of how we plan to move through the business as an ensemble,” said Sumpter. “The time away allows us to bring a very diverse amount of things to our performances and concepts.”

That said, the group doesn’t hide their excitement about being reunited.

“It's always fun being back together making new memories and music through our friendship," said Sumpter.
