Faculty Artist Series Features Guitarist Daniel Bolshoy

Guitarist and Hugh Hodgson School of Music lecturer Daniel Bolshoy will be giving the final performance in this season’s Faculty Artist Series. The performance will take place on Tuesday, April 3rd at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall.

“This is my first solo recital at UGA. I’m looking forward to sharing music that I’ve been playing in recent seasons,” says Bolshoy.

Bolshoy has woven together a guitar program filled with music written over the past 200 years. The composers whose works he is choosing to perform are important to Bolshoy for different reasons.

“This music is a combination of material I’ve recorded before and music I’d like to record in the near future,” says Bolshoy.

One of the pieces, written by Michael Karmon, was dedicated to Bolshoy himself. The Karmon piece is a musical depiction of the ancient city of Jerusalem, which was where the composer spent his childhood just like Mr. Bolshoy did.

His most recent solo CD “Soñando Caminos” (ATMA) is devoted to the works of Spanish composer Eduardo Sainz de la Maza, and in the program audience members will hear Sainz de la Maza’s Campanas del Alba live.

Along with recording, Mr. Bolshoy performs as a soloist with over sixty orchestras around the globe, as well as performing for many chamber music festivals across America and Canada.

“I love working with my students,” says Bolshoy. In addition to teaching at UGA, he also teaches master classes in other parts of the world. Recently, he taught master classes in Montreal, Canada and Jerusalem, Israel. His background in guitar and education has made him a sought-after judge in many international music competitions, including the Guitar Foundation of America and the Tabula Rasa festival in Russia to name a couple.

Many of Bolshoy’s students have won awards in competitions and have received scholarships to leading Universities and Conservatories, including awards in the Federation of Canadian Music Festival, The Northwest, The Guitar Foundation of America, and others abroad. Bolshoy himself  holds a D.M. Degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

“I am looking forward to playing this concert in front of my students, colleagues and the entire UGA and Athens community,” says Bolshoy.
