Faculty Chamber Concert Kicks Off Fall Semester

Please join us in Hodgson Hall on Wednesday, August 15th at 7:30 for a Faculty Ensemble performance. Professor of Clarinet D. Ray McClellan will be joined by David Fung (Assistant Professor of Piano), Maggie Snyder (Strings Area Chair), and Daniel Bolshoy (Guitar Lecturer) in a performance of Piazzolla and Bruch.

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) is described as "the world's foremost composer of tango music." He revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style called Nuevo Tango, which incorporates elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. 

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German Romantic composer and conductor who wrote over 200 works, including three violin concertos, the first of which has become a staple of the violin repertory. Bruch had a long career as a teacher, conductor, and composer.  His chamber music is not as well known, but the Eight Pieces were composed for his sone Max and stand out as masterworks of the genre. 

McClellan, organizer of the event, says, “It is a delight when faculty members from different areas can join together and present the beautiful romantic music of Max Bruch followed by a varied journey through different tango styles of the last century in Histoire du Tango by Astor Piazzolla." 

Pianist David Fung, who is starting his second semester at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, will join McClellan and violist Snyder for Bruch’s Trio. Guitarist Daniel Bolshoy with join McClellan for the Piazzolla Tangos.
