For the first time in its twenty-five-year history, the UGA at Oxford program will offer music classes for credit on the University of Oxford campus. The Franklin Spring Session II will take place from Mar. 25-Jun. 19, 2021. The Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s Jazz Faculty, Dave D’Angelo, will be onsite at Oxford teaching courses.

The UGA at Oxford Program gives students the chance to take music courses for UGA credit with faculty from the world's oldest English-speaking university amidst the domes and spires of Oxford's stunning colleges. D'Angelo will be teaching a Jazz in New York and London seminar. In addition, the following courses will be offered as tutorials taught by Oxford faculty: MUSI 3210: Music History I, MUSI 3220: Music History II, MUSI 3810: Junior Applied Lessons and MUSI 4810: Senior Applied Lessons.

“UGA at Oxford is proud to announce this inaugural opportunity for students to study music on our program. In addition to David D’Angelo’s seminar course, Jazz in New York and London, students will have the ability to take courses in music history and music performance with University of Oxford faculty members. Students will also be able to join University ensemble groups by virtue of their associate membership at Keble College, Oxford. With the expertise of Professor D’Angelo and the Oxford faculty members, the innumerable musical performances spanning genres and styles held on any given day in Oxford, and resources like the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments and the Ashmolean Museum, we are certain that our Franklin at Oxford Spring II 2021 program will be both an academically and creatively enriching experience for UGA’s music students, regardless of discipline or year,” said James McClung, director of UGA at Oxford.

The University of Oxford is one of the leading institutions of higher education in the world.

It is the oldest English-speaking university in the world and has an incomparable tradition of learning, thinking and innovation which counts among its former students and professors some of the greatest minds in the history of Western civilization.

“From the Holywell Music Room to the Sheldonian Theatre to innumerable performances at Oxford college chapels, students on this program will have the opportunity to sample and take part in a rich cultural heritage spanning centuries of English, Western, and global music traditions,” said McClung.

The music courses available include MUSI 5150/7150: Jazz in New York, MUSI 2810-2810L: Sophomore Applied Instruction, MUSI 3210: Music History I, MUSI 3220: Music History II, MUSI 3810-3810L: Junior Applied Instruction, MUSI 4810-4810L: Senior Applied Instruction, MUSI 4000: Directed Independent Study in Music: Large Ensemble, MUSI 4784/6784: Jazz Improvisation I, and MUSI 5106/7106: Jazz Combos.

Current DMA students Alison Gilbert served as a graduate assistant on the Oxford program during a previous summer. “I loved my time with the UGA at Oxford program…One of the greatest parts was accompanying students on their class excursions, where they saw the course material come to life. I went with the Romantic Literature class to Tintern Abbey, where we wandered through the ruins from Wordsworth's poem, and I went with the Arthurian Literature class to Cornwall, which is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I also got to hear a lot of music in Oxford, including a performance of all of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos in the stunning Sheldonian Theatre,” said Gilbert.

“This was a life-changing experience, and I highly encourage other students to apply,” said Gilbert.

The deadline to apply for the program is Oct. 9. For all of the program details and information on scholarships and more, visit the UGA at Oxford website.
