HHSOM DEIB Committee Provides Mission/Values Update

The HHSOM Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging webpage now includes a statement of Mission and Values.  This statement, jointly authored by members of the DEIB Committee throughout the Fall 2020 semester, articulates a contextual approach to music study that we believe is essential for success.  

The mission and accompanying values are designed to promote action and guide the work DEIB is conducting within the HHSOM.  In the future, we hope that a living list of clear, measurable goals is associated with each value statement, demonstrating the ways our institution is actively fulfilling its mission.

DEIB intends to offer this language to policy makers within the School, as we engage in self-examination and strategic planning.  We hope that these, or similar justice-centered principles, will become foundational to our educational community. 

Mission & Values

At the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, we believe that music can be a force for good in a rapidly changing world.  We are committed to guiding students toward artistic citizenship, and to improving the world through creativity and scholarship.

• We value music and music-making in all cultures and acknowledge that different cultures perform, listen to, and make music in a variety of ways and contexts.  We honor that diversity.
• We value music-making at all levels, from beginning amateurs to seasoned professionals.
• We value the history and culture of music in Athens, the State of Georgia, and their diverse communities.
