UGA British Brass Band to perform fall concert

One of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s newest ensembles, the UGA British Brass Band, plays its fall concert in Hodgson Concert Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 8:00 p.m.

Directed by professor of trumpet Phil Smith, the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts, the 32-piece brass and percussion ensemble will perform the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and Mily Balakirev, as well as several English, Canadian and American composers of brass band repertoire.

Dr. ToniMarie Marchioni will come to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music on Friday, Oct. 23, as yet another decorated guest artist ready to entertain and educate. 

 

Marchioni, the Juilliard-educated assistant professor of oboe at the University of Kentucky, will perform a free recital in Ramsey Concert Hall at 3:35 p.m.

Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series translates voice to woodwinds in Nov. performance

The next installment of the Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series will employ a trio of School of Music faculty to transform works for voice and piano into new, imaginative constructions.

The creator of the program—and several of the arrangements therein—is Connie Frigo, associate professor of saxophone at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. For her, the Nov. 3 recital, set for 8 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall, is a high-water mark.

UGA Percussion Ensemble to perform contemporary works in fall concert

UGA Percussion Ensemble

The UGA Percussion Ensemble plays its fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Ramsey Hall.

The ensemble, overseen by Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty members Timothy Adams Jr. and Kimberly Toscano Adams, will perform pieces all written within the last 100 years in this free concert.

ARCO Chamber Orchestra to perform US premiere of “String Fairy Tale”

The ARCO Chamber Orchestra will play a piece never brought before US audiences in Hodgson Concert Hall on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

“String Fairy Tale,” by Efrem Podgaits, will get its US premiere courtesy of the noted string ensemble. Written “for Orchestra, Soloists and Narrator,” the piece will see four different members of the orchestra perform as soloists.

In addition to the premiere, works from Aram Khachaturian, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Jose Bragato, Astor Piazolla and Jacob Gade are included in the program.
