Symphony Orchestra Kicks Off 2nd Thursdays with Beethoven, Mahler

The University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra begins the 2010-2011 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series on Thursday Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall at the UGA Performing Arts Center. The symphony orchestra, under the direction of Mark Cedel, will present a program that includes the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor by Ludwig van Beethoven and the Symphony No. 4 by Gustav Mahler. Tickets for the concert, $15 for the general public and $7 for UGA students with a valid ID, are available through the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 706/542-4400.

UGA to host Southern Graduate Music Research Symposium

The University of Georgia Musicology/Ethnomusicology Student Association will host the first annual Southern Graduate Music Research Symposium August 27-28, 2010 at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The two-day symposium will begin with a panel on Friday, Aug. 27 at 5:30 pm in Edge Recital Hall in the Hodgson School of Music; all symposium events are free and the public is invited to attend.

All Student Convocation

The Hodgson School of Music will host an All Student Convocation on Monday, August 16, from 4:30 to 5:30 in Ramsey Hall at the Performing Arts Center. The agenda will include introduction of new faculty, curricular changes and a message from Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Dean Garnett Stokes, among other items.

Immediately following the convocation there will be a pizza picnic in the second floor lobby for all students faculty and staff. This will be an excellent opportunity to welcome those new to the HHSOM family and to celebrate the opening of the new academic year.

Wind Ensemble in Argentina

The University of Georgia Wind Ensemble under the direction of John Lynch, UGA Director of Bands, toured Argentina recently from May 10 to May 17 as an invited performing ensemble for the nation's 200th bicentennial celebration.  The travelling party of 60 included students and faculty including Dale Monson, Director of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, and faculty soloists Angela Jones-Reus (flute), Amy Marinello (bassoon) and Scott Pollard (percussion).

Vespers Video

On March 23 of this year, the UGA Concert Choir and the Collegium Musicum, under the direction of Mitos Andaya, performed the Vespers of 1610 by Claudio Monteverde. The concert performance in Hodgson Hall involved many guest singers and musicians, including alumnus Derek Chester, who has performed this piece, and others, in several highly-renown venues this year.

Today is the big day (actually for the whole of UGA, it's tomorrow, when we will welcome Alton Brown to campus to address the class of 2010). Tonight at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall, the Hodgson School of Music will honor its graduates and award winners. Our honored guest and speaker tonight is Charles Wadsworth. Congratulations to all of our graduates and their families on this momentous occasion.
