Embodied Belting:

In this 2-hour Experiential Learning workshop, we will playfully explore a “Whole Self” approach to Belting and unlock new possibilities in your singing through a series of acoustic, functional, skeletal, and expression-based lessons. 

We can do this in 2 ways:

1. Singers in person- we’ll use “Let it Be” by the Beatles as a vocal reference

2. Singers each on Zoom- in this case each person could sing whatever solo song choice they like

Singers are encouraged to arrive in comfortable clothes, bring water to drink, and if they have the ability to take off their shoes that would be great (but we can work around if not possible)

Kevin Michael Murphy(He/They) is a NYC based Voice Teacher and the Co-Founder of the NYC Vocal Studio.  Kevin's students regularly appear in Broadway shows/National Tours, on TV competitions like American Idol, and in cabaret and concert venues all over the world. Kevin spent a decade on the voice faculty of NYU Steinhardt teaching both Undergraduate and Graduate Musical Theatre and Vocal Pedagogy majors. Kevin holds a B.M. in Musical Theatre from James Madison University, a M.A. in Vocal Performance from NYU, completed a 3 Year Mentorship Training in Experiential Learning and Facilitation, and is a certified Pranayama Yoga Breathing coach. 

Kevin helps performers find vocal and expressive freedom through the exploration of connections between the Brain, the Body, and the Artistic Self. This holistic approach incorporates elements of performance psychology, cognitive science, movement modalities (Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, etc), and more.  

As an actor, Kevin toured with the Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical, The Book of Mormon, regularly performs with Joe Iconis & Family, and appeared in The Awesome 80’s Prom Off-Broadway. Kevin is also the creator and host of the Bistro Award winning concert series, If It Only Even Runs a Minute, which after 10 years continues to play to sold out houses at Feinstein’s 54 Below. 

Kevin believes in the importance of artists having autonomy over the sounds they make.  "As a voice teacher it is not my job to push my own personal preferences on to you, but rather facilitate your discovery of free and expressive sounds that help you tell the stories you want to tell."

The University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music launches its spring Thursday Scholarship Series of concerts with the winners of the Concerto Competition performing with the UGA Symphony Orchestra. This year’s winners (in alphabetical order): Michael Baker, trumpet; Gabriella McClellan, cello; Anna Savelyeva, piano; Diego Suarez, piano; and Yinzi Zhou, flute. The UGA Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Mark Cedel.

The Emerson Quartet is bringing Beethoven to Athens as part of their Farewell Tour. While they are in town for their performance, they will be offering master classes to students at UGA. These master classes are free and open to the public.

The Emerson String Quartet has maintained its status as one of the world’s premier chamber music ensembles for nearly fifty years. The quartet has made more than 30 acclaimed recordings and has been honored with nine Grammy Awards (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s “Ensemble of the Year” award. Known for its “lively, nuanced playing” (New York Times), the quartet brings an all-Beethoven program to Athens for its final visit to Hodgson Concert Hall as part of its farewell tour.
