Dickie Lee

Assistant Professor of Music Theory

Dickie Lee is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. He earned a Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University, a M.M. in music theory from Temple University, and a B.A. in music theory and composition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to UGA, Dr. Lee was Lecturer of Music Theory at Colorado State University, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses. As a graduate teaching assistant at Temple and FSU, he taught courses in analysis, counterpoint, and composition, and served as Assistant Director for FSU’s Music Living-Learning Community.

Dr. Lee’s research applies theories of interpretation and agency to post-1945 orchestral music and popular genres. His current work investigates the music of Olivier Messiaen, Krzysztof Penderecki, Thomas Adès, George Rochberg, and Ween. He has presented at international and regional meetings in music theory and philosophy, including the International Žižek Studies Conference, Music Theory Southeast, Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory, and various graduate student conferences in music studies. He is the recipient of the Irna Priore Prize for Graduate Student Research at the 2017 meeting of Music Theory Southeast and the Bruce Archibald Award for Outstanding Work in Music Theory from Temple University in 2013.

Dr. Lee teaches graduate courses in form and analysis, first-year music theory, and supervises first-year aural skills at UGA.
