The art of music listening involving study of the evolution of a wide range of musical styles from both western and non- Western traditions. The course's approach is substantially chronological, with elements of music also being covered.

Beginning Steel Drum Band

Provides students with the opportunity to not only study the traditional music of Trinidad, but also to experience this music through performance. Students will also learn about the history and evolution of the steel drum.

Keyboard music of selected composers, single genres, or specific national schools.

Guitar for Beginners
Credit Hours:
1 hour. Repeatable for maximum 4 hours credit.

An introduction to guitar playing. Students will learn basic fundamentals that will allow them to perform well-known songs as well as music that is less familiar. A variety of styles will be explored, including rock, blues, folk, and classical. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar.

Musicology Proseminar

Research seminar in musicology; topics based upon current trends in musicological research.

Applied Music Instruction
Credit Hours:
2 hours. Repeatable for maximum 6 hours credit.

Applied instruction in a musical instrument or voice for the second semester of the freshman year.

Nontraditional Format:

Weekly instruction in a major or secondary applied instrument, voice, or composition, both one-on-one and in seminar. Credit hours vary according to degree program and reflect differing performance expectations and literature difficulty.
