Tuba Euphonium Ensemble

Comprised of Professor David Zerkel's students, the UGA Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble is a performance opportunity for graduate and undergraduate low brass students to play challenging music for their instrument while receiving class credit.  The ensemble, which meets three times weekly, performs literature including serious original compositions for tuba ensemble, transcriptions of orchestral literature, and lighter arrangements. Much of the music presents technical challenges that students may not encounter in their other performing organizations. 

The group performs on campus at least once a semester and has performed around the country in conferences and seminars, including regional and International Tuba Euphonium Conferences in Cincinnati (OH), Chattanooga (TN), Greensboro (NC), and Regina (Saskatchewan).  The group is also frequently invited to perform at the Army Band Tuba Euphonium Conference in Washington, DC.

Horn Choir

The University of Georgia Horn Choir is an active performance opportunity for both horn majors and non-majors at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Directed by Dr. Jean Martin-Williams and Dr. James Naigus, the Horn Choir explores traditional horn choir repertoire in addition to newer music and transcriptions.

The Horn Choir performs frequently at the Southeast Horn Workshop and has received numerous invitations to perform at the International Horn Society Annual Conference.  The ensemble also performs on campus and at venues in the Atlanta area.

In addition to performing with the large ensemble, students in the UGA Horn Choir are also encouraged to study and perform repertoire for smaller chamber groups, including duets, trios, and quartets. All members of the UGA Horn Choir can receive academic credit for their participation.

Bulldog Brass Society

The Bulldog Brass Society is the premier graduate brass quintet at the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs were created in the fall of 1996 by Frederick Mills, founding member of the Canadian Brass and professor of trumpet at the Hodgson School until his passing in 2009.

The ensemble, one of the most active student chamber groups on campus, performs repertoire ranging from Bach to 20th Century works as well as more popular music including home grown arrangements by their members. The BBS has performed throughout the nation and the world, including a European tour, a concert at the Southern Division MENC / Georgia Music Educators Association Conference in Savannah, GA and a special invitation to the Southeastern Composers League Convention.

The quintet has also played throughout the community at the Centennial Celebration of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and at local churches, retirement communities, and outdoor public concerts. Contact Philip Smith for more information.

Georgia Woodwind Quintet

swp_uga_0020-(ZF-3152-93607-1-004).jpgThe Georgia Woodwind Quintet is Ensemble in Residence at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.. Since its founding in 1967, the quintet has maintained an active schedule performing woodwind chamber music from the early quintets of Danzi and Reicha to twentieth-century compositions.

The quintet champions new compositions for woodwinds. It has sponsored seven Symposia for New Woodwind Quintet Music at the University of Georgia since 1978 and recorded a compact disc of winning compositions from past Symposia entitled Twigs: Winning Compositions from the University of Georgia Symposia for New Woodwind Quintet Music by ACA Digital Recordings, Inc.

ARCO Chamber Orchestra

The ARCO Chamber Orchestra was originally founded in Russia in 1989 at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory by Levon Ambartsumian. When Mr. Ambartsumian joined the University of Georgia's School of Music  faculty in In 1995, he remained the artistic director and conductor of the orchestra, moving its home base to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, where the ensemble has now become a talented international blend of musicians.

Since its creation, Ambartsumian has led UGA's ARCO Chamber Orchestra, commercially releasing 15 CDs and has performing four times in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. In 2011, ARCO was invited to perform at La Fenice, the world famous Opera House in Venice, Italy.

Wind Ensemble

The UGA Wind Ensemble has earned an international reputation for its artistry, precision, sensitivity, and musicianship. Membership, determined each semester by blind audition, includes the most accomplished graduate and undergraduate UGA music majors. Employing flexible scoring, the Wind Ensemble (one musician per part) performs chamber works as well as large scale compositions, fresh ink and classics, and music from around the world.

Championing the performance of new music, the ensemble has a rich history of commissioning emerging and established composers. In addition to commissioning and premiering new works, the Wind Ensemble tours nationally and internationally, hosts acclaimed guest artists, and records on the Naxos label. Recent performances include tours in Argentina, France, and Switzerland, as well as featured appearances at the 2009 National CBDNA conference (Austin, TX), and the 2013 American Bandmasters Association Convention (Tampa, FL).

Wind Symphony

As one of the University of Georgia's large wind bands, the Wind Symphony has performed extensively throughout the Southeast, including concerts at regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association and the annual Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conferences.

 The Wind Symphony meets year-round, performing the finest standard and new repertoire for wind band at several concerts each season in the UGA Performing Arts Center. The Wind Symphony regularly features outstanding guest artists and performs collaborative concerts with Georgia High School Bands.

Membership is determined by blind audition and includes undergraduate music majors, music minors, and gifted non-majors who are preparing for careers in performance, music education, or a life-long involvement with music.

Symphonic Band

Experienced undergraduate music majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus are all invited to participate in the University of Georgia Symphonic Band, one of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music's large wind bands.   The Symphonic Band focuses on the classic band repertoire as well as exciting new music, and has recorded for C. Alan Publications. The newly organized Undergraduate Conducting Apprentice Program is also hosted by the Symphonic Band, and the ensemble presents a year-long concert series at the UGA Performing Arts Center.

Michael Robinson leads the UGA Symphonic Band.  Membership is determined each semester by blind audition.
