Ensembles put new spin on chamber music with February Second Thursday concert

February’s Second Thursday Scholarship Series event challenges conventional notions of chamber music with MOD[ular] Ensemble and Revien in Hodgson Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Leading off the concert is Revien, a trio composed of UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music graduates. Kyle Dawkins and Brian Smith alternate between guitars and electronics and Phil Snyder, assistant professor of guitar at the School of Music, plays cello.

UGA Opera Theatre prepares Mozart “romantic comedy” for Valentine’s Day weekend

UGA Opera Theatre presents Così fan Tutte

The UGA Opera Theatre’s spring production presents a world-famous opera at, perhaps, the most appropriate time of year: Mozart’s classic love story, “Così fan Tutte.”

The opera will be performed in the UGA Fine Arts Theatre on February 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. and February 14 at 3 p.m.

Student soloists join UGA Symphony Orchestra for Concerto Concert

Last fall, School of Music students competed for the chance to perform as soloists alongisde the UGA Symphony Orchestra. The winning students, chosen by a panel of School of Music faculty, will perform concertos with the orchestra, directed by Mark Cedel, in Hodgson Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m.

University of Mississippi faculty tenor, pianist to perform Schubert

Two music faculty members of the University of Mississippi, Dr. Jos Milton and Amanda Johnston, will perform for the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music in Ramsey Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. 

Milton, tenor and assistant professor of music, and Johnston, collaborative pianist and associate professor of music, will present a free, multimedia performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise.” 

School of Music piano and violin studios combine for Beethoven Festival

A three-day Beethoven Festival kicks off at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music in Edge Recital Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m.

A joint performance series from the studios of School of Music faculty members Levon Ambartsumian and Evgeny Rivkin, the festival comprises performances of 10 sonatas for piano and violin written by the legendary composer. Faculty members and students alike will take to the Edge Hall stage on Feb. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 12 at 5 p.m.

School of Music outreach educates all ages in Athens, Georgia and beyond

When 1,100 cheering high school students filled Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall to capacity on Jan. 22, it might have seemed like the culmination of the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music's outreach efforts. But it's just the tip of the iceberg.

The Hodgson Wind Ensemble's performance during JanFest, a music festival that annually hosts over 1,000 high school students from Georgia and South Carolina, is an important, visible high point in the School of Music's outreach, but it's just one small part of the festival.

Moscow saxophone professor to perform recital, host master class

Noted saxophonist Vladislav Vals performs a guest artist recital at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music in Ramsey Concert Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. 

Vals, the official artist of Yamaha music in Russia, will perform a program spanning a wide array of saxophone repertoire that Wednesday night. Following the performance in Ramsey Hall, Vals will host a master class in Edge Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Liza Stepanova performs ‘Maverick’ program for first solo faculty recital

Liza Stepanova Musical Mavericks recital

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music will see one of its faculty members perform her first-ever UGA solo faculty recital in Ramsey Concert Hall on Monday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m.

Liza Stepanova, assistant professor of piano at the School of Music, is set to perform a program she’s dubbed “Musical Mavericks,” which will include works spanning four countries and nearly 300 years.

Stepanova says the title comes from the composers’ penchant for writing “independently of the prevailing artistic trends of their time.”
