Congratulations to Mr. Cedel and all the members of the Symphony Orchestra on a job well done in last night's concert.

Bernstein's “Overture to Candide” is a perennial favorite, five or so rollicking minutes that are a workout for the musicians and an effervescent experience for the listener. Given Bernstein's penchant for turning rhythm on its ear, the orchestra, anchored by Cedel's presence on the podium, turned in a performance that exceeded expectations.

The Hodgson School of Music Choral Program will present two events for High School students this September, the annual High School Choral Day (Wednesday, September 28, 2011) and the UGA All-State Choir Audition Boot-Camp (Saturday, September 24, 2011).

The UGA Collegium Musicum performed and attended workshops, discussions, and performances by top musicians during the 2011 Boston Early Music Festival’s Fringe Concert division in June.

The ensembles' performances were reviewed in the Boston press over the course of the festival. From the Boston Globe:

This week, the School of Music is hosting the Clarinet Academy of the South, a five day series of clarinet master classes with Robert DiLutis and D. Ray McClellan. Admission is open to college-age clarinetists, professionals, teachers and a limited number of advanced high school students.

The American Chamber Festival, sponsored by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and the UGA Performing Arts Center, is two evenings and one afternoon of chamber music May 20-22, presented free of charge.

Congratulations graduates (and parents)! The Hugh Hodgson School of Music presents its 2011 Graduation Convocation and Awards Ceremony tomorrow night, May 12, at 7 p.m. in Mahler Auditorium at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
