UGA Percussion Ensemble to perform contemporary works in fall concert

The UGA Percussion Ensemble plays its fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Ramsey Hall.

The ensemble, overseen by Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty members Timothy Adams Jr. and Kimberly Toscano Adams, will perform pieces all written within the last 100 years in this free concert.

ARCO Chamber Orchestra to perform US premiere of “String Fairy Tale”

The ARCO Chamber Orchestra will play a piece never brought before US audiences in Hodgson Concert Hall on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

“String Fairy Tale,” by Efrem Podgaits, will get its US premiere courtesy of the noted string ensemble. Written “for Orchestra, Soloists and Narrator,” the piece will see four different members of the orchestra perform as soloists.

In addition to the premiere, works from Aram Khachaturian, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Jose Bragato, Astor Piazolla and Jacob Gade are included in the program.

UGA choirs prepare fall concert

The UGA Hodgson Singers and University Chorus return to Hodgson Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Center for their annual fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.

The concert, featuring some of the premier vocalists at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, reflects on themes of love, faith, loss and hope, with the program split into four sections named "Reflection and Resolve," "Divine Sentiments," "True Love" and "Credo." 

The singers will perform works from Beethoven, Robert Shaw & Alice Parker, David Dickau and many more.

School of Music trombone studio alum returns for guest concert

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music welcomes back one of its own with a free guest artist concert from trombonist Dr. Jonathan Gill on Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. in Edge Recital Hall.

Gill, who earned his bachelor’s degree in Athens, went on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees and is now an adjunct professor of trombone, euphonium and tuba at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, as well as a successful freelance performer.

Georgia College vocal coordinator to perform for HHSOM

Guest artist Dr. Wendy Mullen will take the stage on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Center.

Mullen, a soprano, and pianist Lev Ryabinin come to Athens as part of a recital sharing program between Georgia College and the University of Georgia.

Mullen’s program includes works from Barber, Debussy, Strauss and others.

Jaclyn Hartenberger becomes 12th HHSOM Lilly Teaching Fellow

For the second consecutive year and 12th year overall, the Hugh Hodgson School of Music was represented at the UGA Center for Teaching and Learning’s (CTL) Lilly Teaching Fellows opening retreat.

Held at Unicoi State Park and Lodge in Helen, the retreat was the first part of the Lilly Teaching Fellows program for the 2015-2017 class, which includes Jaclyn Hartenberger, School of Music assistant professor and director of the UGA Wind Symphony.

UGA Symphony Orchestra performs Dukas, Tchaikovsky and Mozart

UGA Symphony Orchestra

The UGA Symphony Orchestra will perform in Hodgson Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m.

The program features works from Paul Dukas, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, the latter of which features D. Ray McClellan, professor of clarinet at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

The program includes Dukas’s “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet in A Major and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, “Little Russian.” 

Opera Scenes program concert set for Sept. 29

The UGA Opera Ensemble Opera Scenes concert will be held on Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Center.

The Opera Scenes program gives the undergraduate singers of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music an opportunity to perform operatic selections that are suitable for their developing voices and acting talents.
