Thursday Scholarship Series goes beyond the English String Orchestra

On Thursday, April 18, violin professor Michael Heald will bring to the stage a program that takes the audience past what one would typically expect from an English String Orchestra concert. The performance is set for 7:30 in Hodgson Hall. Professor Heald will be leading the performance as concertmaster and will be joined by several faculty guests, as well as student and alumni performers.

 

UGA Symphony Orchestra performs classic repertoire and world-premiere

The UGA Symphony Orchestra will be performing an exciting program in Hodgson Hall on Tuesday, April 2nd at 7:30 pm. This concert is free!

The UGASO is directed by Mark Cedel, with student conductor Jean Gomez assisting. The orchestra will be performing pieces by Robert Schumann, George Walker, and Richard Strauss. Guest faculty artists Josh Bynum will be featured on Walker's "Concerto for Trombone and Strings."

ARCO Chamber Orchestra concert features concertos and world-premieres

The ARCO Chamber Orchestra presents an extraordinary performance featuring two Hugh Hodgson faculty members, Levon Ambartsumian and Evgeny Rivkin, performing concertos. The concert will take place in the Hodgson Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. and will highlight works by Mozart, Schubert, and Glinka. 

 

Gamelan Week brings music, education and culture to UGA campus

The University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music is excited to play host to the inaugural Gamelan Week this April 2019. The series of events is being held in celebration of the Hodgson School’s new Balinese gamelan ensemble Gamelan Chandra Natha, which literally translates as “magical power of the moon.”

 

Faculty viola recital premieres composition from international call for scores

Maggie Snyder, the strings area chair for the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, will be giving a special faculty viola recital during Women’s History Month that celebrates women composers.  On the program she will be performing pieces by both male and female composers, living and historical.  The first piece on the program is by Mozart- a trio for Viola, Clarinet and Piano called “Kegelstatt Trio, K.

Hodgson Singers and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra collaboration brings landmark Bach oratorio to life

The Hodgson Singers, University of Georgia’s premiere choral ensemble, take the Hodgson Hall stage in the second to last Thursday Scholarship Series concert of the 2018-19 season. Joining them will be the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, a professional, early-music orchestra. The date of the concert, March 21st, is significant as it is Bach’s birthday and the concert will feature one of his most lauded works.

 

The UGA Music Research Symposium

The Music Research Symposium, happening Thursday, March 7th at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, brings together undergraduate and graduate students from a diverse range of disciplines to present new research on a broad range of musical topics.  We are very excited to welcome Dr. Alexander Stefaniak of Washington University who will be giving a keynote address on “The Creative Agency of the Werktreu Pianist: Clara Schumann’s Compositional and Performing Voice.”

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music in UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will feature the University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra (UGASO) in the next installment of the school’s Ensemble Series.  

The performance will be held in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall in the Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
