The Second Thursday Scholarship Series concert for October revisits a program last performed at UGA 20 years ago: three Johannes Brahms sonatas presented by Hugh Hodgson School of Music professors Levon Ambartsumian and Evgeny Rivkin.

The concert, on October 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Center, sees Ambartsumian, Regent’s and Franklin Professor of Violin, and Rivkin, professor of piano, returning to the piece that introduced them to the University of Georgia.

Athens, GA ­-- The 2015-2016 Second Thursday Scholarship Concert Series begins on Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. with Mark Cedel and the UGA Symphony Orchestra performing a program featuring "The Planets" by Gustav Holst and Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 100, "Military."

Holst's most popular work, "The Planets" is a seven-movement orchestral suite--each movement named for a planet in the Solar System--that has influenced and been adapted into a vast array of musical styles since its writing in the early 20th century.

The students of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music performed, competed and excelled across the globe this summer. Here are just a few of their highlights.

Matt Norman (MM Performance, Trombone) was named one of six international participants in the 2015 Alessi Seminar at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon (pictured at right). Norman was also the runner-up for the 2015 International Trombone Association’s Lewis van Haney Philharmonic Prize at the International Trombone Festival in Valencia, Spain.

The faculty of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music stayed busy over the summer with performances, seminars and conferences on regional, national and international stages.

Timothy Adams Jr., chair of the Percussion area, and Kimberly Toscano-Adams, Instructor of Percussion, hosted the 34th-annual Cloyd Duff International Timpani Seminar at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music (pictured at right). Students traveled as far as Sweden and Argentina to attend the class. Faculty included Tom Freer of the Cleveland Orchestra and Jim Atwood of the Louisiana Philharmonic.

The Southeast Tuba Euphonium Workshop (STEW) will hold a series of free concerts July 5 - 10 in Edge Hall at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The performances will feature four leading teachers of the euphonium and tuba: Demondrae Thurman, Matthew Shipes, Benjamin Pierce, and UGA's own David Zerkel. The week will conclude with a two concerts featuring participating students.



All concerts are free and open to the public.

University of Georgia Distinguished University Professor Milton Masciadri has been awarded the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts from the World Cultural Council. The award recognizes outstanding personalities whose work has had a significantly positive impact on the cultural legacy of mankind..

Dr. Richard M. Graham, first full-time African American faculty member and former director of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, passed away Monday evening.

Graham held undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Kansas, serving on the faculty of Lincoln University before coming to the Hodgson School in 1968,

where he taught music education and music therapy.

Dr. Liza Stepanova has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music, with her duties beginning this fall. Dr. Stepanova holds an undergraduate performance degree from the Berlin Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, with an accompanying masters and doctorate from The Juilliard School. While at Juilliard, she was named recipient of the Robert French Award for an outstanding dissertation.  

The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music is pleased to announce Peter Van Zandt Lane as new assistant professor of composition beginning Fall 2015. Dr. Lane, who currently serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Florida will be taking over direction of the Dancz Center for New Music.

Lane marks the second Theory-Composition area hire, joining Jesse Jones this coming fall.
