Provides students with the opportunity to not only study the traditional music of Trinidad, but also to experience this music through performance. Students will also learn about the history and evolution of the steel drum.

Keyboard music of selected composers, single genres, or specific national schools.

Changing topics, such as individual composers, music notation, and special research areas.

An introduction to guitar playing. Students will learn basic fundamentals that will allow them to perform well-known songs as well as music that is less familiar. A variety of styles will be explored, including rock, blues, folk, and classical. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar.

Musical styles and genres from the 16th century through Bach and Handel.

 

Research seminar in musicology; topics based upon current trends in musicological research.

Issues, scholars, musicians, current trends, problems, and theoretical concerns in ethnomusicology.

Applied instruction in a musical instrument or voice for the second semester of the freshman year.

Nontraditional Format:

Weekly instruction in a major or secondary applied instrument, voice, or composition, both one-on-one and in seminar. Credit hours vary according to degree program and reflect differing performance expectations and literature difficulty.

A history of the literature and schools of thought in ethnomusicology from the beginnings of the discipline to the end of the 20th century.

Applied instruction in a musical instrument or voice for the freshman year.
