Musicians, educators from Atlanta, Houston join UGA faculty for chamber recital

Members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a member of the famed Medici String Quartet will perform with UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty members in a special performance in Ramsey Concert Hall on Monday, September 12, at 8 p.m.

Violinist Kenn Wagner and cellist Joel Dallow from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Ivo-Jan van der Werff, professor of viola at Rice University, join the School of Music’s Michael Heald and Maggie Snyder, associate professors of violin and viola.

Hodgson Wind Ensemble experiments with first concert of fall 2016

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s premier wind band, the Hodgson Wind Ensemble, will perform their first concert of the season in Hodgson Concert Hall on Tuesday, September 13, at 8 p.m.

The ensemble will perform three works, all of which stand as some of their composers’—Julius Fučík, Karel Husa and David Maslanka—most notable works. And in an effort to broaden the reach of the concert and bring the music to more people, the ensemble is experimenting in several extra-musical ways for this performance.

September Thursday Scholarship Series concert features legends, history, superstition

The University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra (UGASO) begins its season with a concert in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s premier concert series, the Thursday Scholarship Series, in Hodgson Concert Hall on September 8 at 7:30 p.m.

The orchestra’s program includes works from Gioachino Rossini, Manuel de Falla and Dmitri Shostakovich. Mark Cedel, director of the UGASO, expects this program, full of unique and storied works, might subvert traditional orchestra expectations.

School of Music alum earns faculty position at Reinhardt University

Cody Brookshire, a MM Composition graduate of and DMA Composition candidate at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, has accepted an adjunct/part-time music faculty position at Reinhardt University.

Brookshire, whose works have been performed at events and venues in North America, England and China, will teach aural skills, music appreciation and composition at the 133-year-old liberal arts university, located in Waleska, Ga.

UGA School of Music student wins International Clarinet Association competition

Ivan Hernandez, a DMA Performance – Clarinet student at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music, won the International Clarinet Association’s Orchestral Audition Competition at the University of Kansas’ Inge Memorial Hall on August 5.

As part of the association’s 2016 ClarinetFest event, the competition saw Hernandez and three other musicians from across the country—selected from a pool of players who submitted recordings in a preliminary round—play a series of excerpts for three judges.

UGA professor of cello opens Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music opens the 2016-2017 edition of its prestigious Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series with David Starkweather, the School’s professor of cello, performing in Ramsey Concert Hall on Tuesday, August 30, at 8 p.m.

An acclaimed performer, researcher, author and educator with over 30 years at UGA, Starkweather’s performance will showcase not just his own talent, but the talent of some of his frequent collaborators at the School of Music, beginning with the first piece on the program, Handel’s Trio Sonata in G Minor.

Eight School of Music faculty searches completed this spring, summer

UGA School of Music, Performing Arts Center open season with Golden Age Band Concert

UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty and students will form the UGA Golden Age Band in Hodgson Concert Hall on August 25 at 7:30 p.m., taking the audience on a journey through American band music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The concert, which is the joint kickoff to the School of Music’s Thursday Scholarship Series and the UGA Performing Arts Center’s (PAC) season, assembles a rare group under the baton of George Foreman, director of the PAC.

UGA School of Music doctoral grad joins University of North Georgia faculty

Luca Lombardi, a recent DMA graduate from the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music, will join the music faculty of the University of North Georgia (UNG) this semester.

Lombardi will become the Double Bass Instructor for UNG, and he will also teach String Methods, Music Appreciation and Music Fundamentals.

“I am excited to share ideas and experiences, collaborate with and learn from the esteemed faculty of the University of North Georgia,” said Lombardi

A native of Cremona, Italy, Lombardi’s young career is already decorated and expansive. 

UGA School of Music students sweep horn society awards, attend symposium

Three students from the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s horn studio received numerous honors from the International Horn Society (IHS) in mid-June.

Duncan Robertson, Andrew Sehmann and Addison Whitney won all of the organization’s student awards, and at the 2016 IHS Symposium at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., they competed and placed in several competitions, received a private lesson from a featured artist and played in two master classes. The symposium was held from June 13-18.
