World-renowned flutist Emmanuel Pahud to give masterclass at UGA

The masterclass will be held in Edge Hall on Monday, February 19th from 1:30-4:30PM and is free and open to the public. Although Emmanuel Pahud is a flutist, this class should be of interest to all musicians, not just flutists. Pahud's wisdom can be applied to all instrumentalists and musicians. 

Faculty Duo to Perform the Sounds of Russia

Two Hugh Hodgson School of Music professors, Levon Ambartsumian (violin) and Evgeny Rivkin (piano), join together to deliver the sounds of Russia in Ramsey Hall on Thursday, February 15th at 8 p.m. The program features music by Glinka, Alyabyev, Khachaturian, and Schnittke. The order of the program will progressively depict the musical styles from the 19th Century to the modern era.  

UGA to host the Southeast Horn Workshop

Dr. Jean Martin-Williams, Dr. Cathy Kilroe-Smith and the UGA Horn Studio are hosting over 200 horn players February 9–11, 2018 in Athens, Georgia for the Southeast Horn Workshop.  This annual event is held at a different college campus each spring. 

 

Students, professors and professionals will enjoy three days of master classes, performances, competitions, lectures, and exhibits.  There is a special day for high school students on Saturday. 

 

Damon Denton’s piano performance will kick off 2018’s Faculty Recital Series

The UGA Faculty Recital Series will kick off the new year with an evening of music from around the globe performed by pianist Damon Denton. Denton has been on the Hugh Hodgson School of Music Piano faculty as a resident accompanist since 2010. This concert will take place on Tuesday, February 6th at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall.

Concerto Competition Winners and UGA Symphony Orchestra to Perform for Thursday Scholarship Series

Audience members are in for a treat as six of Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s most talented students perform solos with the UGA Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, February 1st at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Hall for the next installment of the Thursday Scholarship Series.

 

Professors Heald and Stepanova to perform Tuesday, January 30th at 8 pm in Ramsey Hall

Michael Heald and Liza Stepanova, both professors in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, join forces to bring us an evening of music by Mozart, Clara Schumann, and Robert Schumann. Heald also shall be giving the world première of a new work for solo violin by Dr. Leonard Ball, associate professor emeritus of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.  Ball, who recently retired from the Theory and Composition area at the School of Music, has had compositions performed across the United States, in Europe, South America, and Japan.

An Evening of Brahms and Colloquium Series Lecture, with Guest Artist Edward Klorman

Three of the School of Music’s faculty members, along with a guest artist, will come together on Friday, January 26th at 8 pm in Ramsey Concert Hall for an evening of Brahms. D. Ray McClellan (clarinet), Elizabeth Knight (mezzo-soprano), and Liza Stepanova (piano) will be joined by guest artist Edward Klorman on viola. Klorman is an assistant professor at the Schulich School of Music at the McGill University in Montreal. He is both a violist and a music theorist.

Pickin' at the Garden: An Interactive Workshop and Concert Series

Athens Music and The State Botanical Garden of Georgia will be putting on the inaugural workshop and concert on Thursday, January 25th at the Day Chapel at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia located at 2450 S. Milledge Avenue. The workshop will kick off at 4:30 p.m. and the concert will happen at 7:00 p.m. The concert will feature traditional and folk music by noted performers Art Rosenbaum (banjo) and Tommy Jordan (guitar, banjo, mandolin). Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments to the workshop and observers are welcome also.
